RSS is good - Absolute links are a must

Filed under: Blogging, IMJUK, RSS — Mercury Thread @ 1:41 pm

One thing that kills me in in RSS feeds are links. Link are a fantastic addition to any RSS feed they help me get to the original source of the story (if there is one), point me to related information and allow me to get a grip on the ideas expressed within the post.

Absolute links matter in RSS

For your links to make sense you need to make your links absolute links - relative links dont work.

  • Abolsute Link  - http://www.imjuk.com/contact/
  • Relative Link - /contact/ (the link is relative to your position within a website)

Too often at the moment I keep finding links is RSS feeds that I’ve signed up to that point to loactions on a site using relative links. As the RSS is in my inbox the links don’t work - I’m not on their site so how can they work.
The biggest culprit I’ve found so far is Big Mouth Media, all the internal links in their RSS feed are relative links, as they update their feed so many times a day - it’s really grating.
