Do Google plan for a Christmas Update

Posted by: Mercury Thread In: Google PageRank| IMJUK| Internet Marketing| Pay Per Click| SEO| Search Engine Optimization

Over the last couple of years I’ve noticed a wee trend emerging at Google. In the run up to christmas they seem to mess about with their algorithm. This could be completely normal and just the way that the dice fall on the Search Engine craps table or these dice could be loaded in favour of the house.

I’m a cynic and I like the X Files so it could well be that I’m seeing a conspiracy where none exists. But with the strange flux I’m seeing and this being the prime period for e-tailers (I hate that word) you could have the following thought process. Google knows Xmas is critical to many online stores. If you ‘tweak’ the algo and cause a little bit of SEO panic you increase the chances of companies using or increasing Pay Per Click advertising.

If I were Google and I knew I could make more money by tweaking PageRank filters, causing paid link panic and ’shifting’ the SERPs would I do it? Of course I would - I’ve got shareholders who’ve paid a fortune for their shares. Websites need Google to get traffic and leaving isn’t an option. So if your natural rankings collapse what can you do apart from pay more for PPC. OK its going to lower your profitability as the Cose Per Aquisition will increase but it’s better to have an increased CPA than no sales.

So maybe its time we just get ready every year to experince the Google that steals Christmas and prepare to tighten the e-marketing sphincter.
