Google leads the way but MSN is catching up!

Hmm. I’m not overly convinced by this but according to comscore the last month has seen MSN start to catch up with Google in the United Kingdom in terms of reach. I’m happily ensconced in a little UK Google Bubble and this may be why I’ve missed the surge of traffic coming to my sites from MSN.

As usual the big three search engines continue to dominate the search landscape:

  • Total unique visitors to websites in the UK in September was 32.2 million
  • 28.3 million of these visited Google sites- giving a reach of 89%
  • 26.75 million of these visited MSN sites - giving a reach of 83%
  • 21 million of these visited Yahoo sites - giving a reach of 65%

Its important that comscore uses describes the brand and then lists sites. When they talk of Google they’ll be including traffic to YouTube and stuff like that. However it is interesting to note that in the UK if you have a message on MSN then you could get the same visibility as you get on Google. This may mean that those banner campaigns you’re running should maybe be preference tested on MSN. I know MSN is a touch expensive for CPM campaigns but if the reach continues to grow and you make the best banners you can maybe it’ll become a truly cost effective means of communicating your brand message to consumers.
