Internet Marketing - Marketing your Website with RSS (Part Two)

Discovering new places to get your RSS feed syndicated is an exciting business. I can hear you laughing from here! If you can find someone willing to syndicate your content, especially if the syndication source is ‘on topic’, you could have constantly developing links, pointing to your new pages when they go live, and you get to control your anchor texts - try getting that from a standard directory.

Developing your list

The first thing I generally do is have a quick think about the niche market the website is looking to penetrate. Don’t think in terms of keywords: think in terms of ideas, concepts, markets and where your ‘community’ is going to reside online. With RSS syndication you’re looking at more than just links - you’re looking for visitors - and you’re then looking for visitors who could become subscribers. Subscribers will visit more often and are more likely to convert from a visitor into a sale (assuming you have something to sell).

You can start making a generic list: use simple sources if you’re a blog things like technorati and blogcatalog are good places to start. Its a good list - updating frequently so stick it in your RSS reader. You’ll find more as you go along - every day more are being released so get your Google Alerts up and running.

What I do is try and categorise all the syndication sources I know of, by niche, and try and build up the list as I go on - is about 100 for the core work list with some other smaller lists for some niches. For example if you’re doing an Internet Marketing blog places such as http://www.seo24.org.uk/ or http://mashups.imjuk.com will syndicate your feed online and give you links.

If at all possible try and uses sources that will drive traffic and not just link.

Syndicating your feeds

Well this bits easy. just stick in your feed, generally if you meet the conditions of the site you’ll get in. On many there could be ways of getting increased visibility - some may just stick you in the directory.

In the next part we’ll have a look at how to optimize your feed to get the best information onto the web - to get you the best links in the best context.
